Health Insurance in Florida, Explained by a Broker Who Lives It
Florida has one of the largest Marketplace populations in the country. Here’s how to navigate it — and how I can help.
If you buy your own health insurance in Florida, you’re in big company. From Miami to Jacksonville, Orlando to Tampa, hundreds of thousands of Floridians get covered through the federal Health Insurance Marketplace every year — and the options change more than most people realize.
How the Marketplace Works in Florida
Florida uses the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. Each fall, insurance companies file their plans for the coming year, and during Open Enrollment (November 1, 2026 – January 15, 2027) you can shop, compare, and enroll. Enroll by December 15 and your coverage starts January 1.
Plans are grouped into metal tiers — Bronze, Silver, and Gold — that describe how costs are split between you and the plan, not the quality of care. Depending on your income, you may qualify for federal tax credits that lower your monthly premium, and cost-sharing reductions that lower what you pay at the doctor’s office on Silver plans.
Outside of Open Enrollment, you can only enroll if you have a qualifying life event — things like losing job-based coverage, moving to a new area, getting married, or having a baby. These trigger a Special Enrollment Period, usually 60 days.
Who I Help in Florida
Most of my Florida clients fall into a few groups:
- Self-employed and gig workers — realtors, contractors, rideshare drivers, freelancers, and small business owners across South and Central Florida who need coverage without an employer plan.
- Early retirees — folks in their late 50s and early 60s covering the gap years who need solid coverage for a few critical years.
- People between jobs — COBRA is often shockingly expensive; Marketplace plans are usually far more affordable for the same stretch.
- Young adults aging off a parent’s plan — turning 26 means finding your own coverage, and the Marketplace is built for exactly that.
- Seasonal residents — snowbirds splitting time between Florida and another state need to think carefully about plan networks that travel with them.
Why Work With a Florida Broker Instead of Going It Alone
The Marketplace website will show you plans, but it won’t tell you which doctors are actually easy to see, which plans have surprised people with bills, or how a plan change next year affects the prescriptions you take. That’s what I do.
As a licensed broker, I help you compare plans side by side — networks, drug coverage, deductibles, and real total cost — in plain English. There’s no fee for my help; I’m paid by the insurance company. And I don’t disappear after enrollment: when you get a confusing bill or need to change plans, you call me directly at 954-787-9118.
Don’t Wait Until December
Every year, people rush in during the last week of Open Enrollment and end up picking in a panic. The smart move is to talk through your options early — even before November 1 — so that when enrollment opens, you already know your plan.
