Just Lost Coverage? Start Here
Do not start from zero and do not wait for paperwork to find you. Three facts and one clock decide your next move.
I’m Christopher Horne, a licensed health insurance broker serving Florida, Texas, Arizona, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Virginia. This page is the short version: if your coverage just ended — or is about to — these are the facts to gather today. The full explanation of the 60-day window and the COBRA comparison lives on my Lost My Job — What Now? page, and I am not going to make you read it twice. Start here.
Fact One: Your Exact End Date
Coverage does not always end on your last day of work. Some employers run it through the end of the month; others stop it sooner. Your HR department, separation letter, or benefits portal has the real date. Everything — your enrollment window, your new start date, whether a gap exists — keys off that date, so it is the first thing I will ask you for.
Fact Two: Proof That You Lost It
The Marketplace can ask you to prove the loss, so keep whatever shows it: a letter from the employer or the former plan saying coverage ended and when, a COBRA election notice, or a termination notice from the insurer. Do not throw the envelope away, and do not send documents, Social Security numbers, or birth dates by text. When proof is needed, it goes through the official application — I will tell you exactly what to upload and where.
Fact Three: Your Income From Here
Your options depend on what your household expects to earn for the rest of the year, not what you used to make. A rough, honest estimate is enough to start. If a new job is coming, say so — a short bridge plan and a longer enrollment are different conversations.
Your Clock
Losing coverage generally opens a 60-day Special Enrollment window — and in many cases you can apply up to 60 days before the loss so the new plan starts as the old one stops. Already past the end date? The window may still be open, but it is shrinking. The detailed rules, the COBRA math, and the Florida/Texas coverage-gap honesty are all laid out on the full lost-coverage guide, with more on qualifying life events and COBRA alternatives.
Three Things Not to Do
- Do not wait for the COBRA packet to start comparing. You can run the comparison while the packet is in the mail; the deadlines run in parallel.
- Do not guess your end date. A wrong date can create a gap or a rejected application. Get it in writing.
- Do not let the window close quietly. Miss it, and you may be waiting for Open Enrollment. If your end date is anywhere nearby, text me today.
Taking regular medications? Send those names through the drug-cost check too, so the plan we pick covers them from day one.
Start With Your End Date
Text LOST with the last day of your old coverage (or the day it ends). Einstein will flag the timing for me the same day; I map your window and options personally.
Einstein, my assistant, watches this line, confirms what came in, and gets it to me fast. I make the coverage recommendation personally.
