What Does My Plan Actually Cover?
The honest answer is “more than most people use.” Here’s what’s in there and how to check any specific service.
I’m Christopher Horne, a licensed health insurance broker serving Florida, Texas, Arizona, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Virginia. Most clients use a fraction of what their plan includes. This is the plain-English tour of what a Marketplace plan generally covers — and how to verify the one service you actually care about.
Preventive Care: the Part People Underuse
Marketplace plans generally cover a set of preventive services without cost-sharing when you get them from an in-network provider — things like your annual checkup, routine blood work, blood-pressure and cholesterol screening, many cancer screenings, and recommended vaccines. That’s the appointment that catches small problems while they’re still small. If you’ve been putting it off, my using-your-plan guide walks you through booking it.
The Everyday Categories
- Doctor visits: primary care and specialists, usually with a copay or after your deductible, depending on the plan.
- Urgent care and emergency care: urgent care for same-day needs; emergency services are covered as in-network in a true emergency.
- Hospital and outpatient care: surgeries, imaging, lab work — often subject to your deductible and coinsurance.
- Prescriptions: medications on your plan’s formulary, priced by tier. See the filling-prescriptions guide.
- Mental health and substance-use care: Marketplace plans cover behavioral health services, including counseling and treatment.
- Maternity, newborn, and pediatric care: including dental and vision for children.
- Rehabilitation and therapy: physical, occupational, and speech therapy within plan limits.
What Varies From Plan to Plan
Whether a specific service is covered, and what you’ll pay, depends on your plan: deductible, copays, coinsurance, network, and whether the service needs prior authorization. Dental and vision for adults are usually separate policies, not part of the medical plan. Anyone who quotes you a specific dollar amount without looking at your actual plan is guessing.
