Do I Qualify?

Four facts drive almost every eligibility answer. Bring me those, and I’ll tell you which door is actually yours — Marketplace, Medicaid, or a job plan we need to compare.

I’m Christopher Horne, a licensed health insurance broker serving Florida, Texas, Arizona, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Virginia. “Do I qualify?” sounds like one question, but it is really four. Answer those four honestly and I can usually tell you which door to walk through first. Einstein, my assistant, watches the text line and gets your facts to me quickly; I make the eligibility call personally.

The Four Facts That Decide It

  1. Where you live. Your state and ZIP matter because plans, provider networks, and Medicaid rules are local. A plan that works across town may not include your doctors, and Medicaid eligibility changes at the state line.
  2. Who counts in your household. For Marketplace purposes this usually means you, a spouse if you have one, and the dependents on your tax return. Roommates generally do not count just because they share an address. Shared custody and adult dependents can change the answer, so mention them.
  3. Your best honest income estimate for the coverage year. Premium help is tied to household income and household size. It is not a quote I can responsibly give from one salary number without knowing who is in the household and what else is coming in.
  4. What coverage is already available to you. A job-coverage offer, Medicaid eligibility, or a recent coverage loss can change whether Marketplace help is available and whether you have a Special Enrollment window now or need to wait for Open Enrollment.

How the Answer Usually Sorts Out

Medicaid may be the first door

Arizona, Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio expanded Medicaid. If your income fits your state’s rules, Medicaid may be the right starting point, and the state makes that decision. I will point you to the right door rather than forcing a Marketplace application that does not fit.

The Marketplace may be the door

If Medicaid is not yours and you do not have another coverage offer that blocks Marketplace help, the Marketplace is where we compare plans. Any premium help depends on your household income, household size, ZIP, and the coverage available where you live. That is why I check it individually instead of putting a made-up number on a web page.

A job offer can change the math

If your employer (or your spouse’s employer) offers coverage that meets the federal standards for affordability and value, that offer can affect Marketplace premium help even if you never enrolled in the job plan. Bring me the job-plan details and we will compare the real options side by side.

The Florida and Texas Coverage Gap — Said Plainly

Florida and Texas have not expanded Medicaid. Some adults can earn too little to qualify for Marketplace premium help while also not qualifying for Medicaid under the state’s current rules. That is the coverage gap. I will not dress it up or promise a plan inside it. If that is where your facts land, I will tell you straight, and we can talk about community health centers, watching for an income or job change, and timing an application when your situation changes. In Arizona, Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio, expansion means the math often works differently — and we check Medicaid first there.

One More Eligibility Fact People Miss

Marketplace coverage generally requires U.S. citizenship or a lawful immigration status. If that is part of your situation, we will talk privately and carefully. Do not send documents, ID numbers, or immigration paperwork by text — just tell me it is part of the picture and I will explain the safe way to handle it.

What to Send Me

Text QUALIFY to 954-787-9118 with four things: your ZIP, how many people are in your tax household, your best estimated yearly household income, and whether anyone has a job-coverage offer. Please do not send a Social Security number, birth date, or documents by text. Once I see the four facts, I can tell you which door is yours and what happens next. For the deeper state-by-state version, start with Medicaid vs. Marketplace.
