You Enrolled — Now What?
A plan only helps if you know how to use it. Here is the plain-English walk-through I give every client.
I’m Christopher Horne, a licensed health insurance broker serving Florida, Texas, Arizona, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Virginia. The most common thing I hear after enrollment is: “Okay… now what?” This page is the answer.
Step 1: Watch the Mail for Your Member Card
Your insurance card comes by mail from the carrier — it does not come from me. Until it arrives, you can usually find your member ID in the carrier’s online portal or mobile app. If nothing shows up within about two weeks of your start date, text me and we’ll track it down together.
Step 2: Set Up Your Member Portal
Register on the carrier’s website or app with the member ID from your card. That portal is where you’ll see your plan details, check claims, find in-network doctors, and track your deductible. Set it up before you need care, not from a waiting room.
Step 3: Pick a Primary Care Doctor
If your plan requires a primary care provider (many HMO plans do), choose one early from the plan’s network. Even on plans that don’t require it, having one doctor who knows you makes everything else easier. Not sure who’s in network? Start with my find-a-doctor guide before you book anything.
Step 4: Book Your First Visit
A good first move is your yearly preventive visit — a checkup and blood work. It’s how you catch small things while they’re still small, and preventive care is generally covered without cost-sharing when you stay in network. Bring your card, a list of your medications, and your questions.
Step 5: Use Your Pharmacy Benefits
Show your member card at the pharmacy — that’s how the pharmacist knows your plan. Using your plan’s preferred pharmacy usually costs you less than a random one. More on that in the filling-prescriptions guide.
Urgent Care vs. Doctor’s Office vs. ER
- Your doctor: checkups, ongoing issues, referrals, anything that can wait a few days.
- Urgent care: same-day problems that aren’t life-threatening — a sprain, a fever, a cut that might need stitches.
- Emergency room: life- or limb-threatening emergencies only. Call 911 first.
Choosing the right door matters: the same problem can be handled at very different costs depending on where you walk in. When in doubt during business hours, text me first.

Questions About Your Plan?
Text me what’s confusing you and I’ll walk you through it — that’s what the text line is for.
