Health Insurance in San Juan, Texas
San Juan, Texas — a mid-size community in Hidalgo County. Marketplace and supplemental coverage help from a licensed broker who answers his own phone.
San Juan is a mid-size community in Hidalgo County, Texas, with about 35,294 residents at the 2020 census.. I work with San Juan clients entirely by phone — plan comparisons, enrollment, and the follow-up questions that show up after the card arrives.
How the Marketplace Works in Texas
Texas uses the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. During Open Enrollment (November 1, 2026 – January 15, 2027) you can shop, compare, and enroll — enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1. Depending on household income, advance premium tax credits can lower your monthly premium, and cost-sharing reductions can lower what you pay for care on Silver plans. Texas has not expanded Medicaid, so there is a coverage gap below 100% of the poverty level — but tax credits are available at 100% and above, which is where I do most of my Texas quoting. If you’re not sure which side of that line you’re on, that’s the first thing we check together.
Outside Open Enrollment, a qualifying life event — losing coverage, moving, marriage, a new baby — triggers a Special Enrollment Period, usually 60 days.
Who I Help in San Juan
Most of my San Juan clients fall into a few groups:
- Families — Parents comparing plans for the whole household, not just themselves — kids’ doctors and prescriptions drive the real cost.
- Self-employed & 1099 workers — No HR department, no group plan — your coverage is a business decision, and we treat the tax-credit estimate like one.
- Turning 26 — Aging off a parent’s plan is a qualifying event. We get your own coverage started without a gap month.
- Retired before 65 — Early retirement changes the insurance picture completely — income-based credits often make these years surprisingly affordable.
A Local Note on Choosing Well
San Juan sits in Hidalgo County, and like most Texas communities its size, one or two in-network doctors can make or break a plan choice. The 2020 census counted about 35,294 residents here. Whatever plan you’re looking at, I check the network against the doctors, clinics, and pharmacy you actually use — not just the premium on the first screen. I work with San Juan clients by phone and text, so the whole conversation happens wherever you are — kitchen table counts as my office.
Why Work With a Broker Instead of Going It Alone
The Marketplace website will show you plans, but it won’t tell you which doctors are actually easy to see, which plans have surprised people with bills, or how a plan change next year affects the prescriptions you take. That’s what I do.
As a licensed broker, I help you compare plans side by side — networks, drug coverage, deductibles, and real total cost — in plain English. There’s no fee for my help; I’m paid by the insurance company. Many of my clients also stack supplemental coverage on top of their major medical: Golden Rule (UnitedHealthcare) AccidentWise, HospitalWise, and DentalWise Max dental coverage — benefit amounts and limits vary by the policy you choose, and we review the actual schedule together before you enroll. And I don’t disappear after enrollment: when you get a confusing bill or need to change plans, you call me directly at 954-787-9118.
