Health Coverage for Veterans & Military Families

Thank you for your service. This page explains, in plain language, how VA care, CHAMPVA, TRICARE, and the Marketplace fit together — and where I can help your family for free.

Here is the most important sentence on this page: if you are enrolled in VA health care, TRICARE, or CHAMPVA, you already have qualifying health coverage. You do not need to buy anything else to satisfy the law. (Source: HealthCare.gov, “Health care coverage options for military veterans.”)

Please read this first: Christopher Horne and insuredwithchris.com are not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by any organization listed on this page. We do not collect donations here — every link goes straight to the organization’s own official website. Listing an organization is a community spotlight, not a partnership.

VA Care vs. the Marketplace — the Plain Version

  • Enrolled in VA health care? You’re covered. Many veterans keep VA care and never touch the Marketplace for themselves.
  • Not enrolled in VA care? Check VA eligibility first — you may qualify and not know it. If you don’t have veterans coverage, you can shop the Marketplace like anyone else.
  • Your family is the gap I see most. VA care covers the veteran, not the spouse and kids. HealthCare.gov says it plainly: dependents who aren’t eligible for a VA program can get coverage through the Marketplace, and depending on income may qualify for lower costs or Medicaid/CHIP.
  • CHAMPVA families: CHAMPVA (for spouses/children of certain permanently and totally disabled veterans) also counts as qualifying coverage. If your family has CHAMPVA, you’re covered; if a family member loses CHAMPVA (for example after a divorce), that loss can open a special enrollment window.

Life Changes That Open a 60-Day Enrollment Window

  • Leaving the military / separation or retirement (TRICARE changes)
  • Losing TRICARE or other coverage for any reason
  • A child aging off TRICARE Young Adult at 26
  • Marriage, divorce, a new baby, or a move
  • A spouse losing a job-based plan

Tell me the date of the change and I’ll tell you honestly whether a window is open. Eligibility always depends on your situation — there are no guarantees and I won’t pretend otherwise.

Who I Help

I help people under 65. And if you’re under 65 and between coverages right now, that bridge is exactly what I do.
