Health Coverage for Police, Fire & EMS Families
You run toward what everyone else runs from. This page is for the families standing behind you — plain-language coverage help, and support resources that understand the job.
Most first responders I meet have decent coverage through the job. The gaps show up around the job: a spouse who isn’t on the plan, a stretch between jobs, or retiring before 65. That’s where I can help — free, no pressure.
Where First Responder Families Get Caught
- The spouse gap: adding a spouse to an agency plan can be priced out of reach. A Marketplace plan for the spouse alone is sometimes the smarter math — it depends on income and the job’s offer, and I’ll run it honestly.
- Between jobs or agencies: changing departments, moving states, or a probationary gap. Losing job coverage usually opens a 60-day special enrollment window.
- Early retirement before 65: many responders retire in their 50s. For the under-65 bridge years, Marketplace coverage is what I do every day.
- Part-time, reserve, and volunteer schedules: coverage that doesn’t come with a W-2 job is exactly what the Marketplace is for.
- Family changes: marriage, a new baby, divorce, or a kid turning 26 and aging off your plan — each can open an enrollment window.
Eligibility depends on your situation, and if your job’s plan is genuinely your best option, I’ll tell you that too.
