Moving States? Your Health Plan May Not Move With You

Many plans are built around local networks. A permanent move can open a limited window to choose new coverage.

I’m Christopher Horne, a licensed health insurance broker serving Florida, Texas, Arizona, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Virginia. If your move is to one of those sixteen states, I can help you compare new options where you will actually live and get care.

Why Moving Matters for Coverage

Most individual health plans use regional provider networks. A doctor who was in network in your old state may not be in network after you move, even if the insurance company name looks familiar. That is why a permanent move to a new state is generally treated as a qualifying life event for a Special Enrollment Period, with conditions that depend on your prior coverage and situation.

Before You Move

  • Confirm the last day and terms of your current coverage.
  • List the doctors, clinics, and hospitals you want near your new home.
  • List prescriptions and any treatment in progress.
  • Save your new address and expected move date — applications ask for both.

After You Arrive

  • Do not let the Special Enrollment window pass — it is generally 60 days around your move for Marketplace coverage when you qualify.
  • Be ready to document the move and prior coverage if asked.
  • Check networks in the new ZIP code, not your old one.
  • Update your address with any existing carrier or Marketplace account promptly.

Moving to One of My Sixteen States?

Start with the state page for where you are headed, then ask me about cities and doctors near your new home:

Popular landing spots I help with include the Florida coast and Central Florida, Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston and Austin in Texas, Phoenix and Tucson in Arizona, Columbus and Cincinnati in Ohio, Grand Rapids and metro Detroit in Michigan, and Des Moines in Iowa — ask me about your specific city.
