Lost Your Job? Your Coverage Clock Is Already Running

Losing a job is hard enough. Here is how to compare your options before a deadline passes.

I’m Christopher Horne, a licensed health insurance broker serving Florida, Texas, Arizona, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Virginia. When job-based coverage ends, most people have more than one path — and a limited time to choose.

First, Find Your Coverage End Date

Check your separation letter, HR email, or final benefits notice for the last day of employer coverage. That date drives everything else. If you are not sure, call me and we will work out what to verify first.

Your Main Paths After Job Loss

  • COBRA continuation: In many cases you may be offered the chance to continue the employer plan for a limited time. You generally pay the full cost of that coverage yourself, plus any allowed administrative charge. Read the election notice carefully for deadlines and terms.
  • Marketplace coverage: Losing job-based coverage is generally a qualifying life event that opens a Special Enrollment Period, commonly 60 days from the loss of coverage. Eligibility and timing depend on your situation.
  • A spouse or partner plan: If available, ask about that employer’s enrollment window and rules — those deadlines are set by that plan.
  • Medicaid: Depending on your state and household situation, you may be directed to Medicaid. Florida and Texas have not expanded Medicaid for many adults, while Arizona, Iowa, Michigan, and Ohio have expanded programs. I can help you understand which door to check first.

The 60-Day Window Matters

For Marketplace coverage after a loss of job-based coverage, the Special Enrollment Period is generally 60 days. Missing it can mean waiting for the next Open Enrollment period unless another qualifying event applies. Do not wait until the last week to start comparing doctors, prescriptions, and plan rules.

For a deeper side-by-side on keeping the employer plan, see my COBRA alternatives page.

What to Compare

  • When each option starts and whether there would be a gap.
  • Whether your doctors and hospitals are in the plan’s network.
  • How your regular prescriptions are handled.
  • Deductible, copay, and out-of-pocket rules for the care you actually use.
  • Whether you need coverage for a few months or for the rest of the year.
