Does Health Insurance Cover Therapy? Yes — Here’s How

Mental health care is an essential health benefit. Here’s what that actually gets you.

Yes. Mental and behavioral health care is an essential health benefit — every plan sold on the Marketplace must cover it. And federal parity law says plans can’t make mental health benefits harder to use than medical ones: no separate higher deductible, no stricter visit limits than comparable medical care.

What’s Typically Covered

Coverage varies by plan, but Marketplace plans generally include:

  • Therapy and counseling — individual, group, and family sessions with licensed providers.
  • Outpatient behavioral health programs — including intensive outpatient programs.
  • Inpatient mental health care — hospital stays when a clinician determines they’re medically necessary.
  • Substance use treatment — covered under the same essential benefit (see my rehab coverage page for detail).
  • Telehealth therapy — virtual sessions are widely covered; for many people this is the easiest way to start.
  • Psychiatric medications — covered under the plan’s prescription benefit; check the formulary for your specific medication.

Parity: What It Means for You

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act requires most plans to treat mental health benefits comparably to medical/surgical benefits. In practice that means:

  • Your copay or coinsurance for therapy should be in line with what you’d pay for a specialist visit — not a penalty rate.
  • Plans can’t impose a separate, higher deductible just for mental health care.
  • If a plan requires prior authorization for mental health services, the process can’t be meaningfully stricter than for comparable medical care.

If a plan ever seems to be skirting this, tell me — I’ll help you push back or find a plan that does it right.

Finding a Therapist Who Takes Your Plan

This is the practical part most people get stuck on:

  • Start with the plan’s directory — then confirm directly with the therapist’s office. Directories go stale; a five-minute call saves a surprise bill.
  • Ask about prior authorization before your first session, so there’s no interruption mid-treatment.
  • Consider telehealth first. In-network virtual therapists often have far shorter wait times than local offices — and the coverage works the same.
  • Check the cost-sharing. Know your copay or coinsurance per session before you start, so budgeting is honest.
