Does Insurance Cover Rehab in Florida?
Short answer: yes. Here's how it works, in plain English.
Yes. Health plans sold through the federal Marketplace are required by law to cover treatment for drug and alcohol addiction — it's an essential health benefit, in the same category as doctor visits and hospital care. That includes plans in Florida. If you or someone you love is struggling, the coverage question shouldn't be what stops you from getting help.

What's Typically Covered
Every plan is a little different, but Marketplace plans generally cover the full range of substance use treatment:
- Detox — medically supervised withdrawal, usually in a hospital or detox facility.
- Inpatient / residential rehab — staying at a treatment facility for days or weeks.
- Outpatient programs — including intensive outpatient (IOP) and partial hospitalization, where you live at home and go in for treatment.
- Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) — prescriptions like buprenorphine or naltrexone combined with counseling.
- Counseling and therapy — individual and group sessions for substance use.
Plans can't charge you more for this care than they'd charge for any other medical care — no separate, higher deductible just for addiction treatment.
What to Check Before You Go
A few things determine what you'll actually pay out of pocket:
- In-network vs. out-of-network. This is the big one. A facility that's in your plan's network costs far less than one that isn't. Always confirm with your plan first — not just the facility.
- Your deductible and out-of-pocket max. You may owe your deductible first, but your costs stop at the plan's out-of-pocket maximum for the year.
- Prior authorization. Many plans require approval before inpatient or residential stays. The facility usually handles this, but it can take a day or two.
- Medical necessity. The plan covers treatment a clinician says you need. A quick assessment at the facility or with your doctor establishes this.
Florida Notes
Florida — especially South Florida — has more treatment centers than almost anywhere in the country. That's good news, but it means you have to check carefully: confirm any facility is in-network with your specific plan before you walk in, because out-of-network bills add up fast. If a facility ever pressures you to sign something before verifying your coverage, slow down and call me first.
