Income Estimation Guide

The estimate that determines your tax credit — done right.

Your income estimate is the single most consequential number on your Marketplace application — it sets your tax credit, your cost-sharing reductions, and potentially your program eligibility. Estimate too low and you'll owe at tax time; too high and you overpay all year. Here's how to get it right.

What counts: MAGI

The Marketplace uses Modified Adjusted Gross Income — roughly your adjusted gross income plus tax-exempt Social Security, tax-exempt interest, and foreign earned income exclusions. It includes: wages, tips, self-employment net income, unemployment, Social Security, retirement distributions, investment income, rental income, and alimony (for pre-2019 agreements). It does not include: gifts, inheritances, child support, or Roth IRA qualified withdrawals.

The estimation method

  • Stable W-2: annualize current pay honestly — salary × pay periods, plus expected bonuses and overtime.
  • Variable/hourly: average recent months, adjust for known seasonal patterns; update quarterly.
  • Self-employed: net — revenue minus legitimate business expenses. Track monthly; update quarterly.
  • Multiple streams: total everything; the Marketplace doesn't care how many sources you have.

The update habit

Life changes — report them within 30 days: raises, job changes, new gigs, marriage, new baby, moves. Each update recalculates your credit for the remaining months. The people who owe at tax time are overwhelmingly the people who never updated; the people who update quarterly almost never have surprises.

Reconciliation: how the true-up works

At tax time, Form 8962 compares your advance credit against what your actual income entitled you to. Overpaid credit gets repaid (with caps for lower incomes); underpaid credit comes back as a larger refund. It's not a penalty — it's arithmetic. But the caps mean lower-income households have limited downside, while higher-income households should estimate carefully.

Special situations

  • New job mid-year: blend old and new income for the annual total; don't annualize either alone.
  • Unemployment: counts as income — include it, and update when you return to work.
  • Retirement distributions: 401(k)/IRA withdrawals count (Roth qualified withdrawals don't).
  • Marriage/divorce: household composition changes the whole calculation — update immediately.

Pro tip: keep a one-page "income tracker" — each source, monthly actual, running annual projection. Update it quarterly when you update your application. Ten minutes, four times a year, zero April surprises.

The bottom line

Your income estimate is a living number, not a one-time guess. Estimate honestly, update quarterly, and reconciliation becomes arithmetic instead of anxiety. The fifteen minutes you spend updating each quarter is the highest-ROI insurance activity there is.
