Give Blood. Save Lives. Right Here in Our Communities.
Blood drives and donor centers in Florida • Texas • Arizona • Ohio • Michigan • Iowa
One donation takes about an hour — and can help save up to three lives. Here’s where to give in the states I serve, what to expect, and the thank-you gifts centers often hand out.
I’m Christopher Horne, a licensed health insurance broker — but this page isn’t about insurance. Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood: an accident victim, a surgery patient, a mom after delivery, a kid fighting cancer. Blood can’t be manufactured. It only comes from people who roll up a sleeve. So I put together the real donor centers and drive finders for the sixteen states where I live and work. You don’t have to be my client. If this page gets one more person to donate, it did its job.
Why Giving Blood Matters
- One donation can help up to three people. Your blood gets separated into red cells, plasma, and platelets — each can go to a different patient.
- The need never takes a day off. Hospitals use blood every single day, and donated blood has a limited shelf life, so centers always need fresh donors.
- The actual draw takes about 10 minutes. The whole visit — sign-in, mini check, donation, and snack — usually runs about an hour.
Every Donation Includes a Free Mini Health Check
Before you donate, the center checks your blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and iron level — OneBlood calls this a “Wellness Checkup,” and results are posted to your private donor portal afterward. Think of it as a free snapshot of your numbers. It’s not a doctor’s visit and it doesn’t replace your regular checkups — but knowing your blood pressure and iron is a genuinely useful first step, and it costs you nothing but the time you were already spending to help someone.
The Thank-You Gifts Are Real, Too
Blood centers rely on donors, so they often say thanks. Recent promotions across the country have included free movie tickets, gift cards, t-shirts, and prize sweepstakes for people who give. Here’s the honest part: these are examples from recent promotions — offers change by center, drive, and date, and nothing is guaranteed. Always check the center’s page before you go. The gift is a bonus. The life you help save is the point.
Blood Drives in Your State
Pick your state for the main donor center near you, how to find a drive by ZIP code, and what they’re offering donors lately:
Florida — OneBlood
OneBlood runs donor centers and Big Red Bus drives all over Florida, with daily updated donor promotions.
Texas — Carter BloodCare
Carter BloodCare covers North, Central, and East Texas, with centers like the Baylor Donor Center in Dallas.
Arizona — Vitalant
Vitalant is Arizona’s main blood provider, with a Donor Rewards program and valley-wide centers.
Ohio — Versiti
Versiti Blood Center of Ohio runs community drives across the state, with a live mobile-drive schedule.
Michigan — Versiti
Versiti Blood Center of Michigan schedules hospital and community drives statewide, all year long.
Iowa — LifeServe
LifeServe Blood Center serves Iowa hospitals, with donor centers across the Des Moines metro.
Nationwide: The American Red Cross
Wherever you are, the American Red Cross is another solid option — enter your ZIP at redcrossblood.org to find a drive near you. Recent Red Cross donor promotions have included a $10 Amazon gift card by email plus 200 Donor Rewards points (for example, one running October 19 – November 22). Same rule as everywhere: offers change, so check their site for what’s live when you go.
Can I Donate? The Basics
Exact rules vary a little by center, but the general picture is simple:
- Age: most centers accept donors at 16 with parental consent, and 17+ on your own.
- ID: bring a photo ID.
- Weight: minimums are around 110 pounds for whole-blood donation.
- How you feel: you should feel healthy on the day you give.
- How often: whole blood can generally be given every 56 days.
Not sure you qualify? Don’t guess — the center’s screening takes two minutes, and they’ll tell you straight. Even if you can’t donate today, sharing a drive with friends and family helps more than you’d think.
One Last Thing (The Insurance Part, Kept Short)
That free mini checkup is a great snapshot — but snapshots don’t treat anything. If your numbers ever come back high, or a screening flags something you want looked at, having real coverage in place before you need it is what turns a scare into a plan. That’s the one thing I do: I help people in these sixteen states get health coverage that actually fits, and I review every enrollment personally. If you have questions, I’m one call or text away.
