Gig Work Pays the Bills. It Does Not Come With Benefits.

Delivery and rideshare income goes up and down. Here is how gig workers approach coverage without guessing blindly.

I’m Christopher Horne, a licensed health insurance broker serving Florida, Texas, Arizona, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Virginia. I help 1099 gig workers — delivery drivers, rideshare drivers, shoppers, and multi-app workers — compare coverage in their own name.

Gig Income Is Real Income — Estimate It Carefully

Marketplace applications ask for expected household income for the coverage year. For gig work, that means looking at your app earnings, tips, mileage and expenses, and any other jobs, then building an honest estimate you can support. I am not your tax advisor, but I will help you think through the application estimate and why updating it when your work changes matters.

Routes Gig Workers Commonly Compare

  • Marketplace coverage in your own name: based on household, income, state, and other eligibility factors.
  • A spouse’s employer plan: if available, check that plan’s rules and deadlines.
  • Medicaid: depending on state and circumstances, you may be directed to check there first, especially in expanded states.
  • Supplemental products: accident or dental-type supplemental options may be available separately depending on state and product. These do not replace major medical coverage.

On-the-Road Questions to Ask

  • Which urgent care clinics and hospitals near where you drive are in network?
  • How are prescriptions you rely on handled?
  • What happens if you are injured while working? Health coverage and auto or occupational accident policies are different things — we will not confuse them.
  • Do you drive in more than one state or plan to move soon?

Keep Your Estimate Current

If you add an app, lose a contract, take a W-2 job, or your hours change a lot, tell me. Updating expected income during the year helps keep your application aligned with your real situation.
