Find Sober Living in Iowa
Recovery housing in Iowa, through the state’s own help line and the national directories
Free. No sign-up. No fees - ever.
Availability changes daily - always call to confirm
Sober living beds open and fill fast, and no website (including this one) can promise you a room. Use the resources below to find homes near you, then call the home directly and ask: "Do you have a bed open, and what do I need to do to get it?" If calling feels like too much right now, text me and I will help you work through it.
I’m Christopher Horne, a licensed health insurance broker. I keep this page because "search the internet and hope" is a terrible answer at the worst moment of someone’s life.
One honest difference in Iowa: Iowa does not yet have a state certifying affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) - the state is still building toward NARR-certified recovery homes. So instead of one certified directory, this page points you to the resources that actually work in Iowa today: the state’s own help line (which knows local recovery housing), the NARR national directory, and Oxford House’s self-run sober homes. Because certification isn’t standardized in Iowa yet, the questions below matter even more - ask them of every home. This page is information only - it is not an endorsement, and I do not place people or guarantee admission to any home.
Want help making the calls? That part is free too.
Text RECOVERY to 954-787-9118 and I’ll send you these links and help you figure out which homes fit - men’s, women’s, your part of Iowa - and I can sit on a three-way call with you while you talk to them. You don’t have to be my client. You don’t have to buy anything. This page exists to be used.

Your Life Iowa
Iowa’s free, 24/7 help line for alcohol, drugs, gambling, mental health, and more - no judgment, run by Iowa Health and Human Services. Their location finder covers recovery housing and treatment across Iowa, and the counselors know the local options.

NARR - National Alliance for Recovery Residences
The national body behind recovery-residence standards. Its national directory lists NARR-certified residences - use it to check any Iowa home that claims certification, and to understand what the standards require.
Oxford House
A national network of self-run, self-supported sober homes - residents apply directly to each house, and houses exist for men, women, and women with children. Their directory lists current houses and how to check openings, including in Iowa.
SAMHSA National Helpline
Free, confidential, 24/7 referrals to treatment and recovery support, in English and Spanish - no insurance needed to call.

Before you call: questions worth asking
- Do you have a bed open today - and if not, is there a waitlist?
- What does it cost to move in, and what is due each week? (Prices change; get today’s number from the home, not a website.)
- What are the house rules - meetings, curfew, drug testing, guests?
- Are medications for addiction treatment (like Suboxone or methadone) allowed? Homes differ - ask directly.
- What happens if someone relapses? Get the answer in writing if you can.
- Can I see the agreement before I pay anything? Keep copies of everything you sign.
How insurance fits in
One short, honest note: under the Affordable Care Act, health plans cover substance-use treatment - detox, inpatient and outpatient programs, counseling, and medications - as an essential health benefit. If you live in Iowa and want help checking what a plan would cover for treatment, that’s my day job and there’s no charge to ask. Text 954-787-9118 or see health insurance in Iowa. The housing help on this page is free either way - it is never a condition of anything.
