Term Life Insurance Basics: Protection for the Years Your Family Needs You Most
A chosen coverage period, a named beneficiary, and a death benefit if the insured dies during the term, subject to policy terms.
Life insurance is not about buying a product for yourself. It is about making sure the people who depend on your income are not left making hard decisions during the hardest week of their lives. I’m Christopher Horne, a licensed insurance broker serving Florida, Texas, Arizona, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Virginia, and I can help you review term life options available for your situation.
What Term Life Insurance Is
Term life insurance provides coverage for a chosen period, called the term. If the insured dies while the policy is active during that term, the insurer pays the policy’s death benefit to the named beneficiaries, subject to the policy terms, exclusions, and claim requirements. If the term ends and the insured is still living, coverage generally ends unless the policy allows renewal or conversion and you take that step under its terms.
Term life is different from permanent life insurance. It is designed around a defined protection period rather than lifetime coverage, and it generally does not build cash value. It is also not health insurance and does not pay routine medical bills.
Why Young Families Often Consider It
The years when children are young are often the years when a household has the most riding on each paycheck. Families commonly review term life to help provide for:
- Income the household would still need for everyday living.
- Rent or a home loan.
- Childcare and children’s needs while they are growing up.
- Debts that should not be handed to a spouse, partner, or co-signer.
- Final expenses and the time a family needs to adjust.
The right coverage period and benefit should follow your actual obligations and goals. A shorter need may call for a different review than a need that lasts until children are grown.
Questions to Decide Before You Apply
- Who depends on your income or unpaid work at home?
- Which obligations would continue if you were gone?
- How long does that need realistically last?
- Who should be named as beneficiaries, and do those names need updating?
- Does an employer policy exist, and would it end if you changed jobs?
Application and Eligibility Basics
Term life applications generally involve health and lifestyle questions, and some applications may require additional underwriting information. Age, health history, state of residence, coverage period, and the benefit selected can affect eligibility and the options available. No broker should guarantee approval before the carrier reviews an application.
Christopher’s supplemental book includes Golden Rule Term Life policy labels. Golden Rule Insurance Company, part of the UnitedHealthcare family, is the underwriter or administrator for relevant Golden Rule products, and term life itself is not major medical coverage. Current product availability and policy terms must be checked for your state and application.
