Health Insurance in Houston, Texas

Energy capital, medical capital — Houston deserves coverage that includes the doctors you actually want.

Houston has the largest medical center in the world and one of the biggest populations of self-employed Texans — energy consultants, contractors, truckers, realtors, and small business owners across Harris County and beyond. Texas uses the federal Marketplace, and with this many carriers and plans, comparing them without help is a part-time job.

How the Marketplace Works in Texas

Texas uses the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. During Open Enrollment (November 1, 2026 – January 15, 2027) you can shop, compare, and enroll — enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1. Depending on income, federal tax credits can lower your premium and cost-sharing reductions can lower what you pay for care on Silver plans. Outside Open Enrollment, a qualifying life event — losing coverage, moving, marriage, a new baby — triggers a Special Enrollment Period.

Who I Help in Houston

Most of my Houston clients fall into a few groups:

  • Energy and industrial contractors — consultants and tradespeople working project to project without employer benefits.
  • Small business owners — shops, restaurants, and agencies from the Heights to Sugar Land weighing group vs. individual coverage.
  • Truckers and logistics workers — owner-operators who need coverage that works across state lines.
  • Medical Center-adjacent families — people who want plans with real access to Texas Medical Center specialists.

A Local Note on Choosing Well

Houston’s plan menus are among the widest in Texas, which is great — and overwhelming. The cheapest premium is rarely the cheapest plan once you factor in your doctors and prescriptions. I do side-by-side total-cost comparisons so you see the real number.

Why Work With a Broker Instead of Going It Alone

The Marketplace website will show you plans, but it won’t tell you which doctors are actually easy to see, which plans have surprised people with bills, or how a plan change next year affects the prescriptions you take. That’s what I do.

As a licensed broker, I help you compare plans side by side — networks, drug coverage, deductibles, and real total cost — in plain English. There’s no fee for my help; I’m paid by the insurance company. And I don’t disappear after enrollment: when you get a confusing bill or need to change plans, you call me directly at 954-787-9118.
