What Is Rating Area?
The one-minute explanation of rating area — no jargon.
Rating Area: The geographic zone used to set your premium — prices are calculated by rating area, which is why moving ZIP codes can change your price.
In Plain English
States are divided into rating areas (usually groups of counties or ZIP codes), and insurers set a base price per area. Your premium — and your benchmark plan price, which sets your subsidy — comes from your rating area. Move across a rating-area line and your prices recalculate, even if you stay with the same insurer.
A Real Example
You move from Miami-Dade to a rural county two hours north. Same insurer, same plan name — but a different rating area with different provider costs and competition. Your premium changes, your benchmark changes, and your tax credit changes. Your plan might not even be sold in the new area.
Why It Matters When You Shop
Rating areas explain why your cousin three counties over pays a different price for the "same" plan, and why moving triggers a Special Enrollment Period. When I quote you, everything is rating-area-specific — a statewide average price is meaningless.
Watch Out For
Some rating areas have only one or two insurers — less competition, higher prices, narrower networks. If you're moving, check the new area's options before you commit to the move date so your coverage transition is planned, not panicked.

Common Questions
How do I find my rating area? You don't need to — it's baked into every quote. But knowing prices are area-specific explains why quotes differ by ZIP and why I always quote your exact address.
Can I use a different address to get a cheaper rating area? No — your application must reflect where you actually live. Misrepresenting your address is fraud and can void coverage.
Do rating areas change? States occasionally redraw them, but they're generally stable year to year. What changes is insurer pricing within them.
Put It to Work
When comparing notes with friends or family about premiums, always compare within the same rating area — cross-area comparisons are meaningless. And if you're house-hunting near a county line, know that the rating area follows your address: two similar houses a mile apart can sit in different areas with different prices. It's a legitimate (if minor) factor in location decisions for the self-employed.
How I Explain It to Clients
"Your premium isn't statewide — it's your rating area's," I explain when someone's confused by a friend's cheaper quote. "Same state, different area, different price. That's why I quote your exact address, not a state average." It also means moving even a short distance can reshuffle your prices — worth knowing before you sign a lease.
