What Is Broker Commission?
The one-minute explanation of broker commission — no jargon.
Broker Commission: How licensed brokers get paid: a commission from the insurance company — which is why a broker's help costs you nothing out of pocket.
In Plain English
When a licensed broker like me helps you enroll, the insurance company pays me a commission — a percentage of the premium, set by the carrier and regulated by the state. You pay nothing extra: your premium is identical whether you use a broker or enroll alone. The commission comes out of the carrier's revenue, not your pocket.
A Real Example
You enroll in a $500/month plan through me. You pay $500 (minus your tax credit, if any) — exactly what you'd pay enrolling directly. The carrier then pays me a commission of roughly $15–$25/month for as long as you keep the plan. My incentive is to keep you happy and covered, because I only keep getting paid if you stay.
Why It Matters When You Shop
The commission model is why "free help" from a broker isn't a gimmick — it's the industry's standard distribution model, like real estate agents paid by sellers. You're not the customer being sold to; you're the client being served, and the carrier funds it because brokers bring them enrolled members.
Watch Out For
A legitimate broker never charges you a fee for Marketplace enrollment help and never asks you to pay them directly. If someone wants payment from you for ACA enrollment assistance, that's a red flag — real broker compensation comes from the carrier.

Common Questions
Do brokers push the plans that pay the most? Reputable brokers recommend based on fit — and commissions are broadly similar across carriers for ACA plans, which removes most of the incentive problem. Ask your broker directly how they're paid; transparency is the norm.
Does using a broker affect my subsidy? Not at all — your tax credit is calculated identically. The broker is invisible to the subsidy math.
What if I want to switch brokers later? You can designate a new agent of record. Your plan and subsidy are unaffected — it's an administrative change, not a coverage change.
Put It to Work
Since broker help costs you nothing extra, the rational move is to use it: get a second set of eyes on your plan choice, your subsidy estimate, and your network verification every year. The commission model means your broker's incentive aligns with keeping you covered and happy long-term. If your broker disappears after enrollment, find one who doesn't — year-round service is part of what the commission pays for.
