Health Insurance in Detroit, Michigan
The Motor City’s comeback includes a lot of newly self-employed Detroiters.
Detroit’s resurgence runs on small business — new shops, contractors rebuilding the city, freelancers, and remote workers across Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. Michigan uses the federal Marketplace (through HealthCare.gov), and the metro’s plan options reward careful comparison.
How the Marketplace Works in Michigan
Michigan uses the federal Marketplace through HealthCare.gov. During Open Enrollment (November 1, 2026 – January 15, 2027) you can shop, compare, and enroll — enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1. Depending on income, federal tax credits can lower your premium and cost-sharing reductions can lower what you pay for care on Silver plans. Outside Open Enrollment, a qualifying life event — losing coverage, moving, marriage, a new baby — triggers a Special Enrollment Period.
Who I Help in Detroit
Most of my Detroit clients fall into a few groups:
- Contractors and skilled trades — the people rebuilding Detroit, often working for themselves.
- Small business owners — from downtown startups to neighborhood shops across the metro.
- Auto-adjacent workers in transition — folks between plant jobs or supplier contracts.
- Young professionals — first-time buyers in Midtown, Corktown, and the suburbs.
A Local Note on Choosing Well
Michigan expanded Medicaid, so lower-income Detroiters may qualify for the Healthy Michigan Plan instead of Marketplace coverage — I’ll tell you straight which program fits your income rather than selling you something you don’t need.
Why Work With a Broker Instead of Going It Alone
The Marketplace website will show you plans, but it won’t tell you which doctors are actually easy to see, which plans have surprised people with bills, or how a plan change next year affects the prescriptions you take. That’s what I do.
As a licensed broker, I help you compare plans side by side — networks, drug coverage, deductibles, and real total cost — in plain English. There’s no fee for my help; I’m paid by the insurance company. And I don’t disappear after enrollment: when you get a confusing bill or need to change plans, you call me directly at 954-787-9118.
