Virginia Health Insurance Carriers

Virginia runs its own Marketplace — carrier shopping happens on the state exchange.

Since the 2024 plan year, Virginia has operated Virginia's Insurance Marketplace — its own state exchange — instead of HealthCare.gov. The carriers will look familiar (Anthem/Elevance-affiliated Blue plans, Optima/Sentara, CareFirst in the north, plus nationals), but your account, your application, and your shopping happen on the state site. Northern Virginia's federal-contractor churn makes SEP timing a recurring theme here.

How I compare Virginia carriers for you

  • Your doctors first: Inova, Sentara, VCU Health, Carilion, and UVA systems each have distinct carrier relationships.
  • Your prescriptions: full formulary verification before enrollment.
  • Your real monthly math: premium after tax credits plus out-of-pocket — contractor income gaps need planning.
  • Your extras: supplemental plans pair well with high-deductible Virginia options.

Virginia specifics worth knowing

  • Shop on Virginia's Insurance Marketplace — the state exchange, not HealthCare.gov.
  • Medicaid expansion (2019) covers lower-income adults — verify program fit.
  • Military families: coordinate TRICARE/VA with Marketplace coverage for non-covered family members.
  • Northern Virginia contractors: mind the gaps between contracts; SEP timing matters.

When Virginians shop outside Open Enrollment

Federal contract gaps in Northern Virginia, military family moves (PCS orders are classic SEP triggers — keep the orders), and job changes in Richmond or Hampton Roads drive most off-season shopping — 60 days each, on Virginia's Insurance Marketplace. Military families: coordinate TRICARE/VA with Marketplace timing for non-covered members.

Red flags in Virginia shopping

Shopping on HealthCare.gov instead of Virginia's Insurance Marketplace is the state's signature confusion — the federal site redirects, but your account and application live on the state exchange. Also verify military-focused marketers are selling real QHPs; the military community is heavily targeted by limited-benefit pitches.

My take on Virginia shopping

Virginia's state Marketplace is still new enough that confusion persists — and confusion is expensive. Bookmark the state exchange, verify your migrated account data if you were previously on HealthCare.gov, and treat the military-family coordination (TRICARE/VA plus Marketplace) as the planning exercise it is. Virginia's market is competitive and its expansion is established; the only thing standing between shoppers and good coverage is the learning curve.

One more Virginia tip

If you were previously on HealthCare.gov, log into Virginia's Insurance Marketplace before Open Enrollment and confirm your migrated data — income estimate, household, doctors. Migrated accounts sometimes carry stale information, and catching it in October beats discovering it in a January denial.
