Health Insurance in Kent, Ohio
Kent State's city — students, university staff, and Portage County families.
Kent runs on Kent State — graduate students aging off parent plans, university staff households, and Portage County families along SR-59.
How the Marketplace Works in Ohio
Ohio uses the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. During Open Enrollment (November 1, 2026 – January 15, 2027) you can shop, compare, and enroll — enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1. Depending on income, federal tax credits can lower your premium and cost-sharing reductions can lower what you pay for care on Silver plans. Ohio has expanded Medicaid to 138% of the poverty level, so many lower-income households start there, with Marketplace credits above that line. Outside Open Enrollment, a qualifying life event — losing coverage, moving, marriage, a new baby — triggers a Special Enrollment Period, usually 60 days.
Who I Help in Kent
Most of my Kent clients fall into a few groups:
- Grad students & young adults — Households aging off parent coverage or between jobs.
- University staff families — KSU households not on the university plan.
- Portage families — Parents from Kent to Ravenna and Streetsboro.
- Self-employed — Downtown Kent and Acorn Alley businesses.
A Local Note on Choosing Well
UH Portage in Ravenna and Akron systems serve Kent — student and staff households especially need honest network checks before choosing.
Why Work With a Broker Instead of Going It Alone
The Marketplace website will show you plans, but it won’t tell you which doctors are actually easy to see, which plans have surprised people with bills, or how a plan change next year affects the prescriptions you take. That’s what I do.
As a licensed broker, I help you compare plans side by side — networks, drug coverage, deductibles, and real total cost — in plain English. There’s no fee for my help; I’m paid by the insurance company. Many of my clients also stack supplemental coverage on top of their major medical: Golden Rule (UnitedHealthcare) AccidentWise, HospitalWise, and DentalWise Max dental coverage — benefit amounts and limits vary by the policy you choose, and we review the actual schedule together before you enroll. And I don’t disappear after enrollment: when you get a confusing bill or need to change plans, you call me directly at 954-787-9118.
