What Is Form 8962?
The one-minute explanation of form 8962 — no jargon.
Form 8962: The IRS form that reconciles your premium tax credit — required at tax time if you took advance payments to lower your monthly premium. (Informational only.)
In Plain English
Form 8962 is where the premium tax credit gets settled. You (or your tax preparer) enter the monthly numbers from your Form 1095-A, compute the credit you actually qualified for based on final income, and compare it to what you received in advance. The result: additional credit owed to you, or an amount to repay. I'm a broker, not a tax preparer — this is informational so you know what to bring to your tax appointment.
A Real Example
Your 1095-A shows $4,200 in advance credit across the year. Your 8962 calculation says your income entitled you to $4,500. You claim the extra $300 on your return. Flip the numbers — entitled to $3,800, received $4,200 — and you repay $400 (within the cap for your income).
Why It Matters When You Shop
Knowing the 8962 exists changes how you treat income estimates: they're not guesses, they're the opening bid in a calculation the IRS will finalize. Accurate estimates and mid-year updates are how you keep the 8962 boring — and boring is the goal.
Watch Out For
If you received advance credit and don't file Form 8962, the IRS flags it and the Marketplace may suspend your future advance payments until you file. It's the most common administrative headache in the subsidy system, and it's entirely avoidable.

Common Questions
Where do I get the numbers for Form 8962? From your Form 1095-A — every monthly figure you need is in Part III. No 1095-A, no accurate 8962.
My tax software asks for Form 8962 — is that normal? Completely normal if you had Marketplace coverage with advance credit. It's a standard part of the return, not an audit flag.
What if my 1095-A is wrong? Request a corrected 1095-A from the Marketplace before filing. Filing with known-wrong numbers creates a mess that's harder to unwind later.
Put It to Work
When tax season comes, hand your preparer three things: your 1095-A, your final income documents, and a note of any mid-year household changes. If you do your own taxes, the software walks through the 8962 step by step — it's arithmetic, not judgment. And file even if you think you don't need to: with advance credit in play, filing isn't optional, and the sooner you file, the sooner any additional credit comes back to you.
