What Is Dependent?
The one-minute explanation of dependent — no jargon.
Dependent: A child or qualifying relative you claim on your tax return — their coverage, income, and life events affect your Marketplace application.
In Plain English
A dependent is someone you claim on your taxes — usually your kids under 19 (or under 24 if full-time students), sometimes a qualifying relative. On a Marketplace application, dependents count toward your household size (which increases your subsidy) and can be covered on your plan. Their life events — turning 26, getting married, moving out — can change your household and your credit.
A Real Example
You cover yourself and two kids on a family plan. Your oldest turns 26 in June: they age off your plan (their own Special Enrollment Period), your household shrinks from three to two, and your subsidy recalculates. Handle it proactively and there's no gap; ignore it and someone's paying full price or going uninsured.
Why It Matters When You Shop
Family plans price by who's on them, and subsidies scale with household size. Adding or removing a dependent changes both sides of the equation. I always ask about kids' ages and tax status because a dependent aging off mid-year is one of the most common (and fixable) surprises.
Watch Out For
A dependent's income counts toward household MAGI if they're required to file taxes — that teenager's summer job can nudge your subsidy. And you can't cover a child on your Marketplace plan past 26, even if you still claim them.

Common Questions
Until what age can my child stay on my plan? Until 26, regardless of student status, marital status, or where they live. At 26 they age off and get their own Special Enrollment Period.
Does my dependent's income affect my subsidy? If they're required to file a tax return, yes — their income counts toward household MAGI. A teenager's full-time summer job can move the needle.
Can I cover my parent as a dependent on my Marketplace plan? Only in limited circumstances — generally parents can't be covered as dependents on a child's Marketplace plan the way children can. Ask about their own options instead.
Put It to Work
Put your kids' 26th birthdays on your calendar now — with a reminder 90 days out. The aging-off transition goes smoothly when planned (new application ready, Special Enrollment used promptly) and painfully when discovered via a rejection at the pharmacy. Same for college graduates with job-based offers: compare the employer plan against a Marketplace application as an independent tax household before defaulting to the employer's family tier.
