Health Insurance in Galveston, Texas
Island city — UTMB, port, tourism, and cruise economy.
Galveston runs on UTMB's medical center, the port and cruise terminals, and island tourism — students, healthcare workers, and service pros buy a lot of individual coverage here.
How the Marketplace Works in Texas
Texas uses the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. During Open Enrollment (November 1, 2026 – January 15, 2027) you can shop, compare, and enroll — enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1. Depending on income, federal tax credits can lower your premium and cost-sharing reductions can lower what you pay for care on Silver plans. Texas has not expanded Medicaid, so there is a coverage gap below 100% of the poverty level — but tax credits are available at 100% and above, which is where I do most of my quoting. Outside Open Enrollment, a qualifying life event — losing coverage, moving, marriage, a new baby — triggers a Special Enrollment Period, usually 60 days.
Who I Help in Galveston
Most of my Galveston clients fall into a few groups:
- UTMB-connected households — Students, staff households, and contractors around the medical center.
- Port & cruise workers — Terminal and maritime crews without group coverage.
- Tourism & service — Strand and Seawall workers with seasonal income.
- Island families — Year-round households from the West End to downtown.
A Local Note on Choosing Well
UTMB Galveston anchors island care — many plans treat UTMB differently, so I verify UTMB access before we talk price.
Why Work With a Broker Instead of Going It Alone
The Marketplace website will show you plans, but it won’t tell you which doctors are actually easy to see, which plans have surprised people with bills, or how a plan change next year affects the prescriptions you take. That’s what I do.
As a licensed broker, I help you compare plans side by side — networks, drug coverage, deductibles, and real total cost — in plain English. There’s no fee for my help; I’m paid by the insurance company. Many of my clients also stack supplemental coverage on top of their major medical: Golden Rule (UnitedHealthcare) AccidentWise, HospitalWise, and DentalWise Max dental coverage — benefit amounts and limits vary by the policy you choose, and we review the actual schedule together before you enroll. And I don’t disappear after enrollment: when you get a confusing bill or need to change plans, you call me directly at 954-787-9118.
