College Student Health Insurance in Michigan
What each major Michigan school actually requires — and what to do before a waiver deadline passes.
I’m Christopher Horne, a licensed health insurance broker serving Michigan. Below is what I verified from official school sources for each school. Where I could not verify a current published requirement, I say so — requirements change, so text me at 954-787-9118 for a free check for your school and term.
Michigan Schools: Requirement, Waiver, and School Plan
| School | Requirement (as published) | Auto-enroll? | Waiver deadline | School plan cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Michigan Ann Arbor | U-M University Health Services states there is no health insurance mandate for domestic U.S. students. International (F-1/J-1) students/scholars are required to have coverage meeting U-M standards and are automatically enrolled in the U-M International Health Insurance plan at mandatory check-in. Source: official school / administrator page — Verified from official source. | International students auto-enrolled in IHI; domestic students voluntary | International waiver request within 30 days of check-in or within 30 days of a new plan's start | U-M's official Domestic Student Health Insurance Plan page lists a 2026-27 annual purchase price of $3,704.64 (student-only); domestic open enrollment ends September 30, 2026 — check U-M for current rates |
| Michigan State University East Lansing | MSU orientation guidance: domestic students are not required to be covered by the MSU health insurance plan and may voluntarily enroll. International students are required to be covered by adequate health insurance and are automatically enrolled in the MSU Student Health Insurance Plan; medical/veterinary medicine students and graduate assistants are also automatically enrolled. Waivers are available only if alternate coverage meets MSU criteria, by MSU's deadline (waivers are required each semester for these groups). Source: official school / administrator page — Verified from official source. | International + medical students auto-enrolled; domestic voluntary | MSU 2026-27 waiver/enrollment periods (required groups): Fall July 13 – October 9, 2026; Spring I/II December 1, 2026 – March 15, 2027 | MSU Human Resources listed a 2025-26 annual student rate of $3,054 ($1,527 fall) — check MSU for current rates |
| Wayne State University Detroit | Wayne State requires international F-1/J-1 students/scholars (and dependents) to enroll in its International Student Accident and Sickness Plan (IHIP); School of Medicine students are separately required to have adequate coverage. No general domestic-student mandate was found. Source: official school / administrator page — Verified from official source. | Not auto-billed: a registration/health-insurance hold is placed each semester until the student buys IHIP or provides accepted proof. Wayne State's international guidance says: 'DO NOT purchase alternative health insurance. It will not be accepted in place of the Wayne State University plan.' Medical students may waive with proof of adequate coverage (individual/private plans are not a viable waiver option there) | Hold applies each Fall, Winter, and Spring/Summer semester; no single calendar waiver date published | Wayne State published IHIP 2025-26 at $2,404.48 for the year ($1,016.45 fall-only) — check Wayne State for current rates |
| Western Michigan University Kalamazoo | WMU states plainly: 'There is no requirement for U.S. citizens attending WMU to carry health insurance.' International F-1/J-1 students are required and are automatically enrolled in the WMU plan and billed to the student account. Waivers are case-by-case only (government/NGO sponsor with U.S.-based equivalent coverage, or U.S. employer coverage through self/spouse/parent); WMU lists travel/emergency-only, Medicaid/Marketplace, and Canadian provincial plans as not accepted for international waivers, and a new waiver request is required each billing period. Source: official school / administrator page — Verified from official source. | International students auto-enrolled; domestic enrollment voluntary | Waiver is per billing period (Fall and Spring) through WMU's insurance coordinator — no single calendar date published | WMU published Fall 2026 at $868.35 (Aug 1–Dec 31) and Spring/Summer 2027 at $1,215.69 (Jan 1–Jul 31) — check WMU for current rates |
School plan costs above are only shown where a school or its official plan administrator published them, and rates change — check the school for current rates before you decide. A Marketplace plan is not automatically accepted for a waiver: many schools accept Marketplace coverage for waivers, but you must confirm with your school before the deadline.
How Michigan Students Usually Compare
- If your school auto-enrolls you: find the waiver deadline first, then compare. Missing it can mean paying for the school plan even if you already have coverage.
- If you are on a parent plan: check whether your doctors near campus are in network — out-of-state network gaps are the most common surprise.
- If you are shopping in your own name: students often qualify based on their own income. Eligibility depends on your situation — free check, call or text 954-787-9118. Many schools accept Marketplace coverage for waivers, but you must confirm with your school before the deadline.
- Turning 26 mid-semester? That is generally a 60-day Special Enrollment Period around the loss of parent coverage. Plan it before the semester starts.
