College Student Health Insurance in Arizona
What each major Arizona school actually requires — and what to do before a waiver deadline passes.
I’m Christopher Horne, a licensed health insurance broker serving Arizona. Below is what I verified from official school sources for each school. Where I could not verify a current published requirement, I say so — requirements change, so text me at 954-787-9118 for a free check for your school and term.
Arizona Schools: Requirement, Waiver, and School Plan
| School | Requirement (as published) | Auto-enroll? | Waiver deadline | School plan cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arizona State University Tempe / Phoenix area | No domestic student mandate found on official ASU pages — ASU Health Services says insurance is not required to receive treatment there and strongly encourages coverage; the Arizona Board of Regents student plan is voluntary for domestic students. Insurance is mandatory for international students. Source: official school / administrator page — Verified from official source. | International students are automatically enrolled/charged for the Board of Regents plan (Aetna Student Health) unless a waiver with equal coverage is approved; domestic students have no auto-charge to waive | Enrollment/cancel deadlines from ASU: Fall 2026 — September 4, 2026; Spring 2027 — January 25, 2027 | ASU's official summary flyer lists the student plan at $2,956 for 2026-27 ($1,118 fall / $1,838 spring) — check ASU for current rates |
| University of Arizona Tucson | The University of Arizona mandates that all international students on non-immigrant visas be enrolled in the UA Student Health Insurance Plan unless they qualify for an exemption. Domestic students may enroll or cancel during published open enrollment; once enrolled, coverage auto-renews each fall/spring while eligible. Source: official school / administrator page — Verified from official source. | International students mandated; domestic enrollment voluntary, auto-renews once enrolled | Fall 2026 open enrollment deadline: September 8, 2026 | UA posted 2025-26 premiums: $1,045 fall (4.5 months) and $1,720 spring (7.5 months, includes summer) — check Campus Health for current rates |
| Northern Arizona University Flagstaff | No universal domestic mandate found on official NAU pages. International students are required to have health insurance; most other students receive coverage through a voluntary Northern Arizona benefit plan, not an auto-enroll SHIP. Source: official school / administrator page — Verified from official source. | International students are automatically enrolled in the NAU student plan and assessed the premium unless an approved waiver/equal coverage is on file | NAU states the enrollment deadline as 14 days after the first day of classes each semester — check NAU for your term's date | NAU publishes a Full Year 2026-27 student rate of $2,956 ($1,118 fall 2026 / $1,838 spring 2027) — check NAU for current rates |
School plan costs above are only shown where a school or its official plan administrator published them, and rates change — check the school for current rates before you decide. A Marketplace plan is not automatically accepted for a waiver: many schools accept Marketplace coverage for waivers, but you must confirm with your school before the deadline.
How Arizona Students Usually Compare
- If your school auto-enrolls you: find the waiver deadline first, then compare. Missing it can mean paying for the school plan even if you already have coverage.
- If you are on a parent plan: check whether your doctors near campus are in network — out-of-state network gaps are the most common surprise.
- If you are shopping in your own name: students often qualify based on their own income. Eligibility depends on your situation — free check, call or text 954-787-9118. Many schools accept Marketplace coverage for waivers, but you must confirm with your school before the deadline.
- Turning 26 mid-semester? That is generally a 60-day Special Enrollment Period around the loss of parent coverage. Plan it before the semester starts.
