Health Insurance in Abilene, Texas

West Texas hub — Dyess AFB, universities, wind energy, and healthcare.

Abilene blends Dyess Air Force Base, three universities, wind-energy crews, and Hendrick Health — a regional hub where surrounding towns come for care and coverage help.

How the Marketplace Works in Texas

Texas uses the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. During Open Enrollment (November 1, 2026 – January 15, 2027) you can shop, compare, and enroll — enroll by December 15 for coverage starting January 1. Depending on income, federal tax credits can lower your premium and cost-sharing reductions can lower what you pay for care on Silver plans. Texas has not expanded Medicaid, so there is a coverage gap below 100% of the poverty level — but tax credits are available at 100% and above, which is where I do most of my quoting. Outside Open Enrollment, a qualifying life event — losing coverage, moving, marriage, a new baby — triggers a Special Enrollment Period, usually 60 days.

Who I Help in Abilene

Most of my Abilene clients fall into a few groups:

  • Military-connected families — Dyess households buying individual coverage.
  • Wind & energy crews — Contractors across Taylor and Jones counties.
  • University households — Staff and grad families around ACU, HSU, and McMurry.
  • Healthcare workers — Hendrick corridor staff.

A Local Note on Choosing Well

Hendrick Health anchors Abilene care — West Texas families often travel for specialty care, so I check referral networks too.

Why Work With a Broker Instead of Going It Alone

The Marketplace website will show you plans, but it won’t tell you which doctors are actually easy to see, which plans have surprised people with bills, or how a plan change next year affects the prescriptions you take. That’s what I do.

As a licensed broker, I help you compare plans side by side — networks, drug coverage, deductibles, and real total cost — in plain English. There’s no fee for my help; I’m paid by the insurance company. Many of my clients also stack supplemental coverage on top of their major medical: Golden Rule (UnitedHealthcare) AccidentWise, HospitalWise, and DentalWise Max dental coverage — benefit amounts and limits vary by the policy you choose, and we review the actual schedule together before you enroll. And I don’t disappear after enrollment: when you get a confusing bill or need to change plans, you call me directly at 954-787-9118.
