Before you enroll in any policy, verify your agent.
Every licensed insurance agent in America has a National Producer Number (NPN) — a unique ID that ties them to their license records in every state. Look it up in 60 seconds. If an agent won't give you their NPN, walk away.
1What is an NPN?
One number, every state
Your NPN is a unique national ID assigned when you're licensed. It connects all of your state licenses under one record — separate from any state license number.
Public by design
License records are public records. Regulators publish them so consumers can check status, lines of authority, and expiration dates before trusting anyone with their coverage.
Your fraud shield
Scammers and unlicensed sellers can't survive an NPN lookup. Asking for the number — and checking it — is the single fastest way to protect yourself before you enroll.
2Read the result in 30 seconds
You found your agent's record. Here's the only three things that matter:
- Status must say Active. Active means the license is current. Expired, suspended, or revoked means they cannot legally sell you that policy — full stop.
- The state must match where YOU live. An agent licensed in Florida can't sell to you in Texas unless they're also licensed there. Check your state specifically.
- Lines of authority must cover what they're selling. Selling you health insurance? The record should show a health line of authority. Life insurance? A life line. No match, no sale.

Ask me for my NPN anytime — you already have it. That's how this should work with every agent you talk to.
4Red flags — walk away if…
- They won't give you their NPN. Every legitimate agent knows it by heart. Refusing to share it is the biggest red flag there is.
- They ask you to pay them directly instead of the insurance carrier. Premiums go to the carrier — never to the agent personally.
- They guarantee a $0 premium or specific savings in writing before seeing your application. No honest agent promises outcomes.
- They pressure you to sign today or say the deal disappears tomorrow. Real coverage doesn't work that way.
- They're not licensed in your state. Check the record — your state must be listed and Active.

6Quick answers
What is an insurance agent's NPN?
A National Producer Number (NPN) is a unique identifier assigned to every licensed insurance producer in the U.S. It ties the agent to their license records across all states — separate from any state-issued license number.
Is looking up an agent free?
Yes. License records are public records. The lookup tools linked on this page are free and require no account.
What if I can't find my agent's record?
Double-check the spelling of their name, or ask them for their NPN directly and search that. If you still can't find them — or they won't give you the number — do not enroll through them.
Does an active license mean the agent is trustworthy?
No. An active license means they met their state's requirements and the license hasn't lapsed. It's not a recommendation or a guarantee of good conduct — but it's the minimum bar, and anyone who can't clear it shouldn't be selling you anything.
