How Much Does Health Insurance Cost in Michigan?

What decides your 2027 number in Michigan — and how to get your real figure in 60 seconds.

What Actually Decides Your Monthly Cost

Nobody can quote you from a blog post — but everyone should understand the levers. Your cost comes down to six things:

  1. Income and household size. The subsidy formula runs on your income as a percentage of the federal poverty level for your household size. This is the biggest lever most people have.
  2. Age. Older applicants pay more — it's the one factor you can't change.
  3. Where you live. Plans and prices are set by ZIP code and county. Two towns an hour apart can have completely different options.
  4. Tobacco use. Tobacco users can be charged more in most states. Another reason the application asks.
  5. Plan tier. Bronze costs less per month with higher out-of-pocket costs; Gold and Platinum flip that. Silver is the only tier where extra cost-sharing help applies.
  6. The benchmark plan in your area. Your tax credit is calculated against the local benchmark — which is why the same income gets different help in different counties.

The 2027 Rules That Changed the Math

Three things are different for 2027 coverage, and they all push in the same direction — accuracy matters more than ever:

  • The 400% income cliff is back. The enhanced subsidies that stretched help above 400% of the poverty level ended after 2025. Cross that line and the credit can drop off sharply.
  • Repayment caps are gone. If your advance credit was too generous for your actual year-end income, you now reconcile the full difference at tax time — no cap.
  • Your required contribution runs 2.15% to 10.22% of income (IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-26), depending on where you land. The formula is public; the application does the math.

The takeaway: estimate your income carefully, update it when life changes, and don't guess your way through the application. That's literally what I'm here for.

The Only Number That Matters Is Yours

National averages are trivia. Your number takes 60 seconds:

  1. Run the subsidy calculator — see which lane your household lands in.
  2. Self-enroll through my link and see real plans with real numbers for your ZIP.
  3. I review every enrollment the same day — wrong plan, wrong income estimate, missing documents, I catch it.

Michigan-Specific Notes

Michigan's Healthy Michigan Plan (its Medicaid expansion) covers the lowest-income lane — the Marketplace serves everyone above it.
